The most important change is the crypto stuff, the rest should be easy to adapt.
Do I understand correctly that the crypto stuff is used only for authentication, and that it can be skipped if the server didn't want to authenticate? That would ease things a bit.
Still, going crypto would mean finally we could get a https webserver for the admin interface.
No, all communication between server and client after the initial handshake is encrypted. This isn't optional.

Could be, depending on the protocol. If it's not designed well, we'll need to keep a list of items for each tab in the window. Other than that, probably no bigger problem.
