How viable is the current version to run in a production enviroment? - wrysc - 05-20-2013

Hey folks,

Really love what you have got going here, and was thinking of moving from a bukkit server with an average of 150-200 users on at a time with a hard limit of 464. How viable would this be to drive with the current MC Server build?

The server is a dedicated one with an i7 975 and 48GB ram.

What is your current server centered around, is it more of a creative world, or a survivale world? Because survival in MCS is not viable at all, we don't have any decent mob AI. Also, redstone is not what the players would expect. See the list of features / missing features here: https://forum.cuberite.org/showthread.php?tid=499

It's very survival centric unfortunately.

That's a damn shame it's not ready yet, anyway I can contribute to the effort that's not necessarily code? I'd love to use this on a wider scale, and perhaps move our minecraft renting business to MC Server completely.

Well, we could use some testing. The server still crashes way more often than we'd like and it needs some ironing out, unfortunately it usually means waiting for hours before it crashes. The devs don't have that kind of time nor patience Smile
Have a look at the guides for reporting problems:
Windows: https://forum.cuberite.org/showthread.php?tid=400
Linux: https://forum.cuberite.org/showthread.php?tid=631
If you think you could follow them and don't mind reporting errors that might take weeks to fix, that would be useful.

Also, the server has never really been tested under such heavy load, maybe if you can make a test run for 10 minutes on your server, asking your players to have a look, and seeing how it performs, that would be insteresting.

Another area we could use some help is generated content. We're at a stage when we could add villages, strongholds, nether fortresses etc. to the terrain generator, but we need someone to make a world with all the buildings that are to be generated, so that we can save them to a .schematic file. I'd personally like to switch the tree generator to use trees saved in a .schematic files, too, so trees would be welcome as well.
Of course needless to say, we must not just copy stuff from the vanilla server, we need some kind of proof that the content has been specifically made by the users, for copyright / legal reasons. I don't think Mojang would do any problems here, but just to be on the safe side...

I'll see how I can put myself to best use. What about things like server space and funding?
