That error means something like a chat string like is printed to you when you first join is over the limit.

I was originally compiling on Ubuntu 11.10 and all you should have to do is simply type make in the directory you checked out into.

You can feel free to stay up to date on revisions on the SVN but I'd always keep a working stable copy and just overwrite the binary (and possibly any changed files like the webserver stuff or setting...

Welcome, nice intro. If you pay attention to the Google Code project page, you'll notice lots of commits coming in all the time on the SVN version. MC-Server is still beta, so there's sure to be bug...
