I know lighting is about to be rewritten, but I thought I should note this down before it gets lost in my poor memory.
Our current lighting seems to be off by 1 voxel vertically. Meaning, the topmost layer of whatever is generated should block all light, but instead it is almost-daylight.
This means, when digging a tunnel just under the surface, you actually won't need any torches to light the tunnel, because it will be lit "through" the 1 block of dirt above. However, when the player leaves and the chunk is saved to disk, then later re-loaded, lighting is recalculated and the tunnel is no longer lit.
