Although ATM, the old protocols don't actually really work, so there's not much point keeping them around.

Why don't cut but keeping 1.4.7, 1.5.2 and 1.6? I suppose there are not many issues with them.

Quick question: Why do you use the old versions? Is it just for the mod support?

I sometimes use it for mods.

I have old worlds in the old versions that I don't want to migrate (due to generator changes)

Todays snapshot contains this change: "Servers can now customise network compression in server.properties" I'm curious if this is chunk compression or all the packets.

I suppose network compression means in the chunk packets, nothing else makes sense - you'd have a lot of lag if you compressed other data, and the other data is not that much compressible anyway.
