I have finished rewriting the NBT support for faster operation. The initial results are quite amazing: 10-fold increase in reading and 2-fold increase in writing speeds.
So as of rev 485 I'm considering Anvil format fast enough to be used.
Note however, that Anvil support is only limited - e. g. furnace contents aren't saved, so you are still advised not to use Anvil for production-type servers.
