Random Chitchat 2012-2016
I use "git gui" to do the pushes, that way I know exactly what I'm pushing where.

Ideally, the server should calculate the optimum text colour based on the background automatically, especially since not all browsers have implemented <input type colourpicker>. Evidently, that doesn't work well :/

Fixed your case for now.

Tried windows 10 on an old netbook with an old intel atom 1,6ghz processor and 1gb ram.
Quite impressed with results. Seems faster than 7 and can even compare to XP.

I have Windows 10 as a virtual machine. I really like it thus far. Yes it still has some bugs, and some things aren't working as expected, but I'm really excited for it's release nonetheless ^^

Cortana might be fun to play around with, but I doubt I'll use it allot, especialy the vocal commands.

I'm still wondering why do we have to "reserve" a copy of Windows 10 when it's digitally distributed.

tigerw, what backend are you using for the plugin repository?

Think about the bandwidth that they have to consider - if 400 million computers wanted to download the 25GB update in the first week, that would be 10000000000 GB, or 10 EB. Assuming downloads are evenly spread over that week, then they need at least 150 Gb of bandwidth to serve the uploads. They need the registrations to calculate how much capacity they need to reserve, as well as to let them spread out the downloads over a longer period of time.

I suspect 25 GB is a little over the top. 8.1 is 3.62 GB for a full install iso. Also 400 million is a little on the large size. Looking at the guesstimate for windows update size listed here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windo...552?auth=1. I would estimate that the bandwidth is no more than 4 - 8 times a high windows update size. And that's assuming that every computer installing windows updates installs the windows 10 update. Which is unlikely as most large organizations will probably put it off a few years. So I would expect microsoft's total bandwidth requirements to match the normal windows update levels which would mean they probably need no more than 50% more bandwidth. Azure can probably provide that. (remember everyone downloading windows 10 is not going to update their existing install). And they can put off minor windows updates to ease pressure from that.

Also, I've no idea where you got the bandwidth numbers from, but putting the 25 GB, 400 million computers, 1 week assumption into wolfram alpha gives 130 Tb/s or roughly half the global estimated internet traffic. Did you lose a couple of orders of magnitude in you're estimate?

Some additional info:
  • Windows Update had 500mil clients and +500GiB/s traffic on Patch Tuesdays in 2008 (and that was 7 years ago) - Wikipedia
  • The number of Windows Insiders is around 4 million.
  • I don't know the number of people who have registered.
The stated purpose of the registration is to allow the update to download before July the 29th. I will assume that it's to relieve load.
