You can only use a world thats been generated by MCServer

Are there any plans to implement importing worlds from regular savegames in the future? I understand the logic behind the custom world format, but it seems like it could be a very limiting requirement in some respects.

No plans right now, but it could happen some day I guess :O

Agreed, it removes the option to use premade spleef maps etc.

If you could even add in some more map generation features like the ability to enable hell, or snow, or lots of ocean
