I can squeeze up performance from other areas, but not from the new noise functions. I guess they'll remain there for the new features to use - especially overhangs.
I've just (rev 1410) made the MultiStepMap biome generator 3x faster, but not thanks to the new noise, but rather by hacking: using 2D noise functions instead of 3D noise. And it changes the way biomes are calculated, so old worlds will have a visible boundary between old chunks and new chunks
